ORANG UTAN

Orangutans (or orangutans, are unaware of any other name) is a kind of great ape with long arms and reddish or brown fur, which live in tropical forests of Indonesia and Malaysia, particularly on the island of Borneo and Sumatra.
The term "orang utan" is taken from the Indonesian language, which means the man (person) of forest. Includes two species of orangutan, the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) and borneo orangutan (Borneo) (Pongo pygmaeus). What is unique is the orangutan has a close kinship to humans at the level of kingdom Animalia, where the orangutans have a DNA similarity rate of 96.4%.

They have a plump body and big, big necked, long and strong arms, short legs and bowed, and did not have a tail

Orangutan has a height of about 1.25-1.5 m.

Orangutan's body covered with brownish red hair. They have a large head with a height
position of the mouth.

On reaching the level of sexual maturity, male orangutans have a fat temples on both sides, the crown of a large, long hair and beard grow around the face. [8] They have the same senses as humans, namely hearing, sight, smell, taste , and touch.

Weight of approximately 50-90 kg male orangutan, whereas female orangutan weighs about 30-50 kg.

Their palms had 4 long fingers plus one thumb. The soles of their feet also have an arrangement of the fingers are very similar to humans.

Orangutan is still included in the species of great apes such as gorillas and chimpanzees. Great ape groups included in the classification of mammals, has a large brain size, which leads the eye forward, and hands that can grip.


Species and subspecies

1. There are two species of orangutan, the orangutan of Borneo / Borneo (Pongo pygmaeus) and Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii).

2. Sumatra and Borneo Orangutan offspring differ from 1.1 to 2.3 million years ago.


3. Subspecies

* Learning has identified three genetic subspecies of Borneo Orangutan: Pppygmaeus, Ppwurmbii, Ppmorio. [9] Each of the subspecies differentiated according to geographical distribution and covers an area the size of the body.
* Orangutan Central Kalimantan (Ppwurmbii) inhabiting the area of West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan. [9] They are the largest subspecies of Borneo.
* Borneo Orangutan Northeast region (Ppmorio) inhabit the areas of Sabah and East Kalimantan. [9] They are the smallest subspecies.
* There is currently no successful Borneo Orangutan subspecies recognized.


FOODS

Although orangutans including omnivorous animals, most of them only eat plants. 90% of food in the form of fruit. [4], among others, food is the bark, leaves, flowers, several species of insects, and about 300 kinds of fruits.

In addition, they also feed on nectar, honey and mushrooms. They also like to eat durian,
although the sharp scent, but they love it.

Orangutans do not even need to leave their tree if you want to drink. They usually drink water that has accumulated in the holes between tree branches.

Usually the mother orangutan teaches how to get food, how to get a drink, and a variety of tree species in different seasons. Through this, it can be seen that the orangutan has a complex map of forest sites in their brains, so they do not waste energy when searching for food. And children also can find various types of trees and plants, which are edible and how to process the food that is protected by a shell and the sharp thorns.
